As editor of KIOSKmarketplace, Harrell brought his signature traits of passion and professionalism to an industry in which he initially had no knowledge. He quickly became an authority on the industry, and wrote many breaking news stories, well-researched feature stories and clever commentaries.
"John's engaging personality was contagious, and he was absolutely dedicated to a high level of performance," said Rick Redding, general editor of NetWorld Alliance. "John brought an unusual level of enthusiasm to everything that he did, from his work to parenting to Australian Rules Football."
Harrell made an impact during his six months at the Courier-Journal, during which he wrote more than 100 stories, most on the business of horseracing and agriculture. His reputation as a hard-working and talented reporter was noted in his Courier-Journal obituary, as well as his personal traits.
"More important than anything else, John was a super person who was a pleasure to be around," said Bennie Ivory, executive editor and vice president of news at the newspaper. "He always had a smile on his face and was eager to contribute in any way he could. He was a fine young journalist who was only going to get better."
Harrell was pursuing a master's degree in history from the University of Louisville. He was also the founder of the Louisville Football Club, one of the first Australian Rules Football squads in the United States. A highlight of his life was a 2001 trip to Australia, where he visited with fellow players and attended several matches.
Harrell was being treated at Norton Suburban Hospital when he was stricken Sunday night. He died Monday.
Harrell is survived by his wife of nearly 12 years, Laura, and their 4-year-old daughter Hannah. Visitation and funeral services will be held at Highlands Funeral Home, from 3-9 p.m. April 3. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. April 4.
