Evanston lawmaker proposes $5k tax on retail self-checkout kiosks

An Evanston, Illinois councilman has proposed a $5,000 tax on retail checkout kiosks to benefit teen employment, according to an evanstonroundtable.com report.

Devon Reid, the council member for Ward Eight, recently told the city's equity and empowerment commission that grocery prices have not declined despite the introduction of the technology.

He said the tax could help provide training and job placement for local teens.
