New parking meter kiosks have been installed in downtown Kalamazoo, Mich., as part of a broader effort to improve parking access and availability, according to a WKZO news report.
The updates follow recommendations from the city's long-term parking management plan, which aims to help visitors find spaces closer to their destinations while preserving free parking options.
Under the changes, some high-demand areas have shifted to paid parking while other blocks have been converted to free parking, expanding no-cost options downtown. The city has introduced two pricing tiers, with higher rates in the busiest core areas and slightly lower rates on surrounding streets.
Free 90-minute parking remains available in downtown parking ramps, and many on-street spaces will continue to be free.
Officials have also added new signage to support the updated system and are providing a grace period as drivers adjust to the changes. Additional improvements planned later this year include expanded accessible parking and the conversion of loading zones into short-term spaces to better accommodate quick visits, deliveries and takeout traffic.
