Doctor urges pharmacy boards to support pharmaceutical kiosks

March 11, 2020

An advisor to the American Council on Science and Health, Dr. Jeff Singer, has encouraged the pharmacy industry to support pharmaceutical kiosks as a way to improve customer service. In an article on the council's website, Singer said pharmacy machines improve customer convenience, reduce costs and minimize errors due to pharmacist burnout.

Singer noted that the kiosks face resistance from state pharmacy boards. Vending machines have dispensed Plan B emergency oral contraceptives and various drugs on college campuses, Singer noted.

While pharmacy boards argue that patients will not get proper supervision from kiosks, Singer said kiosks are contracted with state‐licensed pharmacists that supervise the dispensing of the drugs and offer consultation remotely on the kiosk screen.
