Display-based solution accelerates kiosk deployments in retail

September 22, 2004

BEAVERTON, Ore. - Planar Systems has launched DS15i, an integrated kiosk platform that enables integrators and independent software vendors to deploy interactive applications in retail environments. Planar's DS15i compact and flexible display-based solution was developed specifically to meet the needs of integrators, independent software vendors and content developers.

"We're seeing a growing market for kiosks in retail environments, and expect to see the overall installed base of kiosks grow from approximately 200,000 units in 2003 to more than 335,000 in 2007," said Francie Mendelsohn, president, Summit Research Associates. "Planar's DS15i provides flexibility for ISVs and integrators to customize applications for kiosk projects and eases the problem of dealing with multiple vendors by simplifying the integration process."

The DS15i offers integrators and ISVs a ready-to-use hardware platform on which they can deploy their software applications for kiosk-like functionality without the added costs of large, mechanical enclosures found in traditional kiosks. The DS15i's compact form factor is just 3.5 inches deep and weighs only 11 lbs. It features a 15-inch, XGA (1024 x 768) monitor and capacitive touch screen. Each DS15i comes with a keyboard and mouse, and the modular design can incorporate peripheral options such as a card swipe, barcode scanner or printer.
