DigitalPersona introduces customer and employee biometric authentication system

November 18, 2013

DigitalPersona Inc. announced a new biometrics-based solution that allows security-minded enterprises to authenticate customers and employees in real time via intranet or VPN. The new DigitalPersona Altus solution features modules for onsite or mobile enrollment, identity verification and lifecycle management of secure credentials. The company also offers Altus professional services to help customers with every phase of their programs, from design and deployment to ongoing technical support, according to a press release.

The company said it expects strong interest from banks, retailers, government agencies and other organizations looking to meet the needs of underserved consumers and citizens. "More than half of the people in the world have no identity credentials. As a result, they have little or no access to banking or government services," said Richard Agostinelli, president and CEO at DigitalPersona. "Our new Altus solution provides those organizations with a secure and cost-effective method of authenticating customers, citizens and employees."

Agostinelli said that in addition to allowing banks and retailers to reach out to more customers, the biometrics-based Altus solution provides employers and government agencies with a highly cost-effective way to verify identities. "Passwords and ID cards can be stolen, shared or compromised," he said. "You can't forget or lose your fingerprint, so it's an effective and affordable way to identify a variety of populations."

The Altus solution consists of a three-part framework that includes Altus Create for enrollment, Altus Confirm for verification and credential management and Altus Control for password management.

The Altus Create module establishes a non-repudiable biometrics database for secure enrollment and access to applications. The database contains digital identities that bind key elements, including biometrics and breeder documents (such as birth certificates).
