The city of Detroit is getting ready to replace its parking kiosks, and the new program introduces some significant changes.
According to a report in Crain's Detroit Business, customers will pay at the kiosk and have their payment associated with their license plate, rather than the parking spot number. That means after they've paid the fee, they can move to another spot if they need to without having to pay again.
The report also said that the new kiosks will only accept coin and credit card payments, citing the fact that the bill acceptors on the older machines frequently jammed and took the machines offline.
Gary Brown, the city's COO, told reporters that the new system will reduce the number of people working in the traffic violation department from 50 to five, but that those 45 others would be reassigned to different departments, not laid off.
