Detroit officials launch new parking kiosks

Detroit officials are deploying new parking kiosks that register cars by the license plate, not by location.

July 29, 2015

Detroit officials are deploying 500 new parking kiosks throughout the city in the next two weeks, according to a report by Detroit Free Press. The plan to roll out these kiosks was first announced this February.

In order to utilize the kiosks, users can input their license plate number on the kiosk keypad. The motorist then receives a certain amount of time that is registered specifically to the vehicle and is used no matter where the motorist parks. This means that the parking fee is vehicle based rather than tied down to a particular parking spot.

Drivers can also download the ParkDetroit app, which will allow users to pay via phone and add time on the go. The app also will send out an alert 10 minutes before the user's time expires.

Drivers will be charged $1 an hour in neighborhoods, $1.50 an hour in Midtown and the Eastern Market, and $2 an hour for downtown parking.
