Detroit airport deploys CLEAR security program to speed ID checks

November 9, 2016

The Detroit Metropolitan Airport recently deployed the CLEAR airport security program at the McNamara Terminal, according to The Detroit Free Press. It will spread to the North Terminal in 2017.

The program uses biometric identification – fingerprints, iris and facial recognition technology – to clear passengers through an ID kiosk checkpoint. They then are escorted to the baggage scan portion of airport security, bypassing the Transportation Security Administration ID checkpoint.

Signing up is a three-step process: CLEAR must authenticate a driver's license or passport, then confirm identity and create an account.

The program differs from TSA Precheck in that CLEAR membership speeds up only the ID portion of the security check. However, it can mean a speedier transit of security overall.
