ATLANTA - An expansion of Delta Air Lines' (NYSE:DAL) self-service, check-in kiosk program is being accompanied by a dramatic increase in traffic at the kiosks, with a record 615,000 passengers using the kiosks during June. During June of 2001, 20,136 passengers used the kiosks.
The airline announced the increase in traffic usage on July 17 as it disclosed a second-quarter net loss of $186 million on revenue of $3.217 billion. Delta chairman and chief executive officer Leo Mullin said the airline is continuing a comprehensive analysis of its business practices while it works to emerge from its current struggles.
But one area where Delta is not struggling is its kiosk program. During the second quarter, Delta added 249 kiosks in 47 airports, raising the number of kiosks in the system to 380 in 79 U.S. cities. The kiosks allow passengers to select seats, request upgrades, and check baggage.
Delta officials also said that kiosk usage grew 230 percent between the first and second quarters of 2002. More than 2 million passengers have used the kiosks this year, according to the airline.
