Delta Air Lines adds bar codes to self-service kiosks

March 14, 2004

Delta Air Lines has raised the bar on quick check-in service with a new bar code embedded in customers' credit cards.

The Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express now includes a member's account number in a bar code on the back of the card and featured in print on the front. When SkyMiles program members scan their cards at airport kiosks, they will be able to immediately confirm their electronic ticket reservations.

"The bar code reader finds the card member's reservation instantly, so the card member will no longer have to type their SkyMiles Program number or destination," said Christine Pierce, Delta's director of Partnership Marketing, in a release. "This new card feature eliminates steps that were previously required and allows SkyMiles Program members to expedite the airport check-in process and reach their gate more quickly than before."

Delta's more than 845 kiosks are located in 81 airports. Passengers can check-in and obtain boarding passes for originating and connecting flights, request a receipt for their ticket, review and change their itinerary and seat assignment, and check the status of their flight, according to the release.
