Customs rethinks self-service at New Zealand airport

Stuff.co.nz: New Zealand's customs officials has shelved plans to trial a self-service kiosk at Auckland's airport that would let frequent fliers re-enter the country without having their passports checked at manned customs booths. Customs issued a tender for the self-service kiosk trial in March 2006, envisaging a kiosk would be used by about 1,000 frequent fliers who had pre-enrolled in the trial. The kiosk was to have been equipped with a scanner capable of checking machine-readable passports, camera and facial recognition software, and possibly have the ability to check passengers' fingerprints against prints passengers provided when they enrolled.
