Covanta Environmental Solutions, a provider of environmental services to the healthcare sector and other industries, has been awarded a contract by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation for a pilot of the department's Pharmaceutical Take Back Program, according to a press release.
The five-year program, which commences this month, calls for the installation of kiosks at 250 retail pharmacies, hospitals and long-term care facilities across New York state. Consumers will be able to drop off their unused and expired medications at the kiosk for safe and secure disposal.
Covanta Environmental Solutions will be responsible for the collection and disposal from participating locations. Collected medications will be processed at the company's Energy-from-Waste facilities.
Since 2010, Covanta has disposed of more than 4 million pounds of unused and expired medications and pharmaceuticals from take-back programs.
