Moscow commuters increased the use of contactless bankcard payments at payment terminals by 16% in 2022 over the prior year, reaching approximately 170 million transactions, according to a Moscow Department of Transport press release.
In March 2022, Moscow Metro passengers paid with their bankcards about 12.7 million times; in December 2022 the figure increased more than 43% to almost 18.2 million transactions. On average, this payment mode was used 465,000 times each day.
"Moscow citizens are increasingly choosing convenient services and not wasting time at ticket offices or ticket vending machines," Maksim Liksutov, the deputy mayor of Moscow for Transport, said in the press release.
In addition, passengers can use other contactless options, including the biometric fare payment system which works without a card or smartphone — passengers look into the camera on the turnstile.
