Coinstar CFO: some redbox DVD-rental releases not restricted by 28-day delay

May 20, 2010

Redbox parent Coinstar's CFO does not see the movie industry's 28-day DVD release agreements as a standard, according to a report by Home Media Magazine.

Speaking Wednesday at the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in Boston, J. Scott DiValerio said he does not expect every studio to negotiate delay agreements of the type redbox recently signed with Warner Home Video, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

He offered as an example Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, which plans to release "Alice in Wonderland" to DVD-rental on its release date.

In other redbox news, DVD-rental industry analyst Eric Wold of Merriman Curhan Ford suggests in another Home Media Magazine article that redbox could see a gross profit gain of $31 million to $51 million this year as Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery close their brick-and-mortar DVD-rental operations.
