Coinme, a Bellevue, Washington-based bitcoin ATM startup, today announced its entry into the Dallas-Ft. Worth metropolitan area by adding more than 90 bitcoin purchase points at Coinstar kiosks in Albertsons and Tom Thumb supermarkets.
Neil Bergquist, Coinme co-founder and CEO, sees Dallas as one of the firm's biggest markets for selling bitcoin in the U.S.
"It's very gratifying to meet the growing customer demand through our relationship with Coinstar, and we couldn't ask for a better partner to help people access and utilize the power of digital currency," he said in a press release.
Coinstar kiosks are those bright green change-counting kiosks that appear in supermarket stores throughout the country. They transform your buckets of spare change into a voucher for cash or an eGift Card. In January of this year, partnered with Coinstar to start selling bitcoin. Specifically, a transaction only requires a phone number and cash in U.S. dollars. In exchange, users get a bitcoin redemption code, which they can redeem on Coinme's website with an account. You can purchase up to $2,500 worth of bitcoin at a time for a 4% flat fee.
CoinmeCoinstar operates more than 20,000 supermarket kiosks in nine countries, and 3,000 of those kiosks in the U.S. are bitcoin enabled. One of the challenges in selling bitcoin in each state is getting a money transmitter license, which can take several months.
