Sue McConnell of the Cleveland Better Business Bureau has warned people to be wary of scammers who contact people and tell them to pay their overdue bills at a bitcoin kiosk, according to WOIO-TV. The TV station interviewed McConnell after a resident called the station and said that she had been contacted to pay a utility bill at a bitcoin kiosk. The scammer provides instructions on how to purchase bitcoin and make a bitcoin payment at the kiosk, McConnell said, and once the exchange is done, it cannot be reversed.
The merchant providing the bitcoin kiosk is not involved in the scam, McConnell said, and many bitcoin kiosks carry notices advising people not to pay bills at the kiosk.
