Charlotte Douglas International Airport installs automated passport kiosks

May 19, 2014

Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C., has installed 24 APC BorderXpress automated passport control kiosks which were originally developed by the Vancouver Airport Authority. It is the seventh airport in the U.S. to install these kiosks.

CLT said travelers don’t pre-register to use the kiosks, which can cut border clearance wait times by as much as 50 percent. Information and instructions displayed on the kiosks can be translated into 13 languages.

According to the minutes of a January 2014 Charlotte City Council meeting, the price for purchasing the kiosks from the Vancouver Airport Authority was $1,413,000, while the cost of the five-year contract with Vancouver Airport Authority for kiosk maintenance and support was estimated at $770,000.

WFAE 907 reports that initially the kiosks can only be used by U.S. and Canadian travelers. However, from June 2014 citizens from 40 countries, mostly in Europe, will be allowed to use the kiosks, it said.
