A nationwide outage of immigration kiosks at major Canadian airports was resolved early Monday after leaving some passengers stuck on planes and in crowded terminals for hours, according to a report by The New York Times.

The Canada Border Services Agency said the kiosks, used at 10 airports, went offline Sunday afternoon due to "an unforeseen technical issue" during routine maintenance. Service was restored overnight, though officials warned residual delays were possible.

The outage forced Toronto Pearson International Airport to temporarily pause deplaning on Sunday, according to airline WestJet. Travelers at airports in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary also reported lengthy waits.

Neither Air Canada nor the affected airports immediately responded to questions about the extent of the disruption. The exact number of delayed flights and passengers remains unclear.

The kiosks are used for travelers to verify their identity on arrival.
