Civil liberties and consumer privacy advocates have spoken out against a California bill supported by Microsoft that is designed to regulate the use of facial recognition, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
Kiosk manufacturers have been introducing facial recognition technology in products designed to help screen people to prevent exposure to COVID-19.
The bill that is currently working its way through the California legislature is designed to regulate the technology. The bill requires companies using facial recognition to provide notice that faces can be scanned. It also allows organizations using the technology to store facial images for future use providing users give their consent.
Opponents claim the bill will result in expanded surveillance.
Matt Cagle, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, called it "a wolf in sheep’s clothing."
