The California Public Utilities Commission has approved requests from three utilities to establish electric vehicle infrastructure rules, according to a recent resolution. The requests came from Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Southern California Edison Company and San Diego Gas & Electric Co.
Ratepayers will cover the costs of service line extensions and electrical distribution infrastructure for separately metered EV charging for customers other than those in single-family residences.
The new rules will ensure utilities provide "utility-side make-ready" infrastructure to support EV charging at no cost for a typical customer, according to the Natural Resources Defense Counsel. The rules will also reduce the costs of installing charging stations for cars, trucks, and buses by about 25%, according to the organization.
