Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston recently deployed 22 automated passport kiosks to improve customer experience and wait times. This brings the total number of automated passport kiosks in the airport to 42, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle.
The kiosks are designed to work for U.S., Canadian and Visa Waiver Program international travelers. In order to use the kiosks, travelers simply scan their passport, take a picture, answer questions and submit the correct declaration forms. The kiosk then prints a receipt that the user can give the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer.
"International passengers are becoming increasingly savvy," said Saba Abashawl, chief external affairs officer, Houston Airport System. "And with that comes increased expectations with the level of customer service."
The kiosks cost $28,000 each for installation and maintenance. Abashawl said the airport might offer Mobile Passport Control by the end of the year, which will allow passengers to complete the entire customs process via mobile app.
