LONDON - British Telecommunications has given British e-mail and Internet users a home away from home with the unveiling of its new line of Web-enhanced pay phone kiosks, called Multi.phones.
The new phone system offers e-mail, Internet, phone, and text messaging services. The touch screen also features immediate information on entertainment, travel, and shopping options, along with sports information. A keyboard allows users to browse their World Wide Web.
Multi.phone is available at hundreds of locations in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, primarily in shopping malls, railroad stations, airports, and the London Underground.
The Multi.phone system was redesigned and manufactured by Santa Clara, Ca.-based telecommunications firm Tatung Telecom Corp. Tatung officials said the project was completed within a seven-month time frame proved by British Telecommunications.
