BREAKING: Court victory for redbox in lawsuit against Universal
August 16, 2009
The U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware today denied Universal Home Entertainment's motion to dismiss redbox's antitrust lawsuit against, redbox announced late on Monday.
The decision marks an important victory for redbox amid its fractured dealings with Hollywood movie studios. Both Sony Home Entertainment and Lionsgate have signed deals worth hundreds of millions with the entertainment-kiosk company. But Universal began a war with redbox last year when it instructed distributors to withhold new movie releases for 30 days; 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. followed suit with similar announcements this month. Redbox already has sued 20th Century Fox in response.
Mitch Lowe, president of redbox, says the court's choice is in consumers' favor:
 | The Federal Court's decision marks an important step forward in our effort to protect consumers' right to convenient, affordable access to new release DVDs at redbox locations nationwide. We appreciate the Court's thoughtful review of this issue and look forward to pursuing our claim and protecting consumers' rights. | |
Redbox has created a Web site,www.savelowcostdvds.com, "dedicated to the effort to protect consumers' rights against studio action."
