Brazilian postal service ECT, as part of an overall technological makeover, plans to install 4,790 public Internet access kiosks during 2002 and 2003, according to published reports. The figure represents a nearly 20 percent increase over the original deployment plans announced late last year.
BN Americas did not provide additional details on the project. The postal service also plans to launch an online shopping mall for small and mid-sized businesses, and in June launched a new business-to-business delivery system targeted to selected retail and software industries.
The kiosks plans were first announced last November by Brazilian president Henrique Carodoso (See story: Brazil will bring Internet to post offices). The original plan was to deploy 4,000 kiosks in 2002, Reuters reported at the time.
