Blue bikes will debut across New Orleans this fall as part of a city bike sharing program sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana that brings 700 bikes to 70 locations, according to bestofneworleans.com. The program is funded through sponsorships, ads and rental fees. Social Bicycles will provide the bikes.
The bikes will be available at kiosks throughout the city 24 hours a day. Riders will download a smartphone app and open an account to access the bikes. A monthly pass is $15, covering up to one hour of riding a day. There will also be a pass for low-income riders at $1.67 a month and a "pay-as-you-go" rate for $8 per hour of use.
The eight-speed, chainless bike comes with GPS, remote locking capabilities, front and rear lights, and a basket. Riders can track their miles pedaled, calories burned and carbon offset by riding rather than driving.
