Kadeya, a Chicago startup, has introduced a vending machine that serves water in a glass bottle, then allows the user to return the bottle to be sanitized and reused. The company's goal is to reduce the use of single-use bottles, according to a Fast Company report.
The user scans a QR code at the machine to dispense the bottle. Once the bottle is returned to the machine, a built-in dishwasher and sanitizes it. The machine then refills the bottle for use by a future customer.
The machine is being tested at an Indianapolis construction site where carrying reusable bottles has been challenging. All the bottles have been returned since the pilot began last fall. The machine does not require a deposit or charge a penalty if the bottle is not returned.
Kadeya plans to have multiple machines at worksites so users can drop off a bottle in a different location at the worksite.
The company plans to pivot to stainless steel bottles, and will offer beverages besides water.
