Baton Rouge Gallery has updated its Art-o-Mat vending machine to reflect more lively colors, according to a 225batonrouge.com report.

Art-o-Mats are refurbished cigarette machines that require the user to pull a knob after placing a token to pay for the art item. Users pay $5 to buy a token.

Debbie Daniel, a gallery board member, has a collection of about 100 Art-o-Mat pieces from the machine.

Art-o-Mat, based in Winston Salem, North Carolina, leases about 180 machines to venues nationwide to allow patrons to buy original artworks from local artists.

The machines were created by Clark Whittington, a North Carolina artist, in 1997. He used the machines to sell his photographic work mounted on small rectangular blocks for $1.
