AWS hosted virtual caregiver to launch clinical trials

December 10, 2018

Virtual caregiving is set to enter both healthcare facilities and patient home settings. In January 2019, G60 Trauma, a specialized trauma care program, will begin testing Addison Care, a comprehensive virtual system designed to provide real time, 24/7 patient monitoring and care, according to a press release.

Addison Care, a subsidiary of SameDay Security Inc., adds new components to an interactive voice platform to offer an augmented reality system tied to visual sensing and connected devices. In addition to enabling a two-way conversation with an electronic caregiver, the technology provides an augmented reality character named Addison, developed on AWS Sumerian.

In a clinical setting, Addison can greet a patient identified through facial recognition; conduct a verbal health examination; collect vitals; and direct a gait and balance session to determine the probability of a ground level fall.

In a residential environment, Addison provides medication reminders; verifies medication consumption; provides medical test reminders; monitors vitals; demonstrates rehabilitation exercises; and assesses a patient's progress, fall risk and responses to escalating conditions and emergencies, including contacting responders or caregivers in time of need.

A network of wireless visual sensors, local artificial intelligence-based processors, interactive tablets, Bluetooth biometric devices and emergency monitoring devices can be set up in a residence.

A network of nationwide private-duty home care providers will serve as both live caregivers and Addison Care representatives.

"Our goal is to expand affordable population health care to the masses, while lightening the burden on providers and payers," SDS CEO Anthony Dohrmann said in the press release. "We are delivering an exciting new form of technology to patients and the active aging to improve their quality of life and health outcomes." Addison will make its debut at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show, Jan. 8–11, at the Sands Convention Center.

G60 Trauma will conduct a study of over 500 patients to document the effectiveness of Addison Care and the electronic caregiver on improving patient outcomes, increasing patient and family satisfaction, reducing hospital readmission and reducing mortality.
