Ordnance Survey, Britain's national mapping agency, contracted with Avatar Interactive, an interactive kiosk company, to produce a kiosk application that will allow users to view and print maps.
Ordnance Survey wants to create and test a generic kiosk application that will allow its products to be used by other kiosk networks.
John Rollin, business development manager for Ordnance Survey, said that kiosks would be an important way to give users Ordnance Survey maps.
The proposed application will allow users to access and print maps of anywhere in Britain. The mapping product will incorporate into any kiosk network running Windows NT or 2000. It could be used in tourism or travel kiosks, such as those at visitor centers and service stations.
To develop this application, Avatar Interactive has partnered with eMapSite.com Ltd, a company specializing in the dynamic delivery of mapping and aerial photography.
Avatar Interactive operates a wide area kiosk network in the UK called TownPages. Its clients include BP and the National Trust.
