Australian businesses explore payroll kiosks

April 28, 2003

SYDNEY, Australia -- The Association for Payroll Specialists said one in 10 Australian workplaces has a self-service payroll kiosk for staff to view and change records online, according to an article in The Age.

The advanced systems enable employees to update contact information, change pay distributions or deductions, apply for vacation days and check how much leave they have available, according to the article.

Online systems have been introduced successfully at Unisys and Cisco Systems in recent years.

But there are lessons to learn from other online implementations. At the Commonwealth Bank, for instance, one-third of the staff signed a petition protesting an online pay system implemented in October. Concerns include poor access to pay details on the intranet and potential breaches of privacy, the article said.

David Lamond, director of the Sydney graduate school of management, said employees might feel uneasy about the disappearance of the paper pay slip. He noted that humans are tactile and like to feel the reality of paper.
