Auburn (NY) parking kiosks to hibernate for the winter?

December 9, 2010

The Auburn (New York) Citizen is reporting on an issue that points to a hidden problem with self-service parking kiosks.

At a recent Auburn City Council meeting, the paper reports, one council member asked for a resolution establishing a moratorium on the parking regulations requiring motorists to buy tickets from parking kiosks on two city streets — because of the winter weather.

"When there's snow, people have to get out of their car, find a path to the kiosk to buy a ticket and then find a path back to their cars," Councilor William Graney told the paper. "On paper they look good, but it just doesn't work."

Some of the city council's members have been critical of the kiosk parking system since it was installed nearly three years ago, citing difficulty reading the on-screen instructions and difficulty in reaching the kiosks through wintertime snowdrifts.
