Atlanta airport passengers tops in self-service check-in usage, survey finds

January 19, 2009

Global Atlanta:Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport leads airports around the world in the percentage of passengers that use online or kiosk check-in self-services, according to a survey released by SITA, an information technology company that services the air travel industry. Baggage is the leading deterrent to self-service check-in options, said Dominique El Bez, director of portfolio marketing for SITA. "The baggage problem will only be solved through a combination of education, improved processes at points where bags are dropped off and increased confidence among travelers that their baggage is safe," he said. The survey found 93 percent of passengers had a mobile device of some sort and that they had expressed positive attitudes about using these devices in the future. El Bez foresaw these devices being used to check on flights and to receive electronic boarding passes as well as contacting hotels.
