Canyon Vista Medical Center in Arizona has installed a secure, ADA-accessible drug take-back kiosk in its emergency room waiting area, giving residents a 24/7 option to safely dispose of unused or expired medications, according to a KGUN9 news report. The self-service unit complies with Drug Enforcement Administration regulations and accepts most prescription and over-the-counter drugs, aiming to reduce misuse, accidental poisonings and improper disposal.
Hospital officials said the kiosk is designed to keep unused medications out of homes and waterways while offering a convenient community resource. CEO Scott Avery said the effort aligns with the hospital's mission to improve community health. National data cited by the hospital indicates that a drug overdose death occurs about every five minutes, with many misused pain medications obtained from friends or family members.
The kiosk accepts most dosage forms, though users are advised to remove or obscure personal information on prescription labels. Items such as sharps, batteries, supplements and illicit substances are not permitted, with guidelines clearly posted. Located in the ER waiting area, the kiosk is accessible year-round without an appointment.
