El Mirage, Arizona has deployed four electric vehicle charging stations at the police department that are available free to the public daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to a press release.

The Level 2 chargers can be used by any on-road passenger electric vehicle and provide 10 to 20 miles of range per hour plugged in and charging.

The stations are part of the "APS Take Charge AZ" pilot program in which Arizona Public Service, a clean energy provider, owns, installs and maintains the stations while the city pays for the energy use.

The city applied to APS to become a participant in the clean energy pilot and will provide feedback on the equipment, charging experience and other information.

The plugs are monitored by APS to provide insights into the needs of EV owners and drivers.

APS has partnered with Arizona businesses, government agencies, nonprofits and multifamily communities to provide expanded access to EV charging. A total of 84 EV charging stations were installed in 2020 through the Take Charge AZ program. Approximately 35,000 electric vehicles are currently using Arizona's roads, according to APS.
