ARCA, TurnKey Kiosks in Bitcoin ATM project

June 5, 2013

Robocoin recently unveiled a prototype Bitcoin kiosk that allows users to purchase or sell the virtual currency from a remote terminal. And cash automation provider ARCA and custom manufacturer TurnKey Kiosks were instrumental in its design and infrastructure.

According to a news release from ARCA, Robocoin co-founder John Russell said the goal of the kiosk was to expand the liquidity of Bitcoin for users of the virtual currency and to provide a convenient access point to introduce newcomers to the technology.

Russell said that after purchasing a prototype unit from TurnKey Kiosks, the development process consisted of integrating already-developed custom Bitcoin software with the hardware components.

"They were incredibly helpful in providing us with the device drivers and APIs required to integrate all the hardware — from the bill validator, the cash dispenser, the printer, the barcode scanner, and even future devices that may be included in our production models," Russell said.

A key hardware component of the Bitcoin ATM is the Fujitsu F400 bill dispenser, which had to communicate effortlessly with the developer's proprietary software. ARCA provided the device drivers and product support to help facilitate the interaction.

"Integrating the drivers into our software was an enjoyable experience for the most part," Russell said. "ARCA's Fujitsu F400 dispenser driver proved to be one of the easiest, most pain-free experiences of them all."
