FORT WORTH, Texas - American Airlines (NYSE:AMR) has prohibited the use of its curbside check-in or self-service kiosks for international travelers, though the kiosks are still in service for domestic flyers.
American, in outlining its security policies on Oct. 11, said that international passengers would have to go to the ticket counter if they are checking in baggage. If they do not have baggage, they can check in at the gate, provided they clear security checkpoints. But they cannot access the airline's OneStop Self-Service kiosks.
"The enhanced security measures are in place for passenger safety," stated an airline news release. "While passengers are aware of enhanced security - such as the presence of law enforcement or military personnel - in the ticket counter and departure gates, extra security is also in place behind the scenes - in the bag rooms, on the ramp, and on the aircraft."
American's OneStop kiosks had been rolled out at 16 U.S. airports at the time of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The kiosks, which can be used to check in, select a seat, and print an e-ticket, were unveiled at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City a week earlier.
