The American Heart Association has introduced Los Angeles County's first mobile Hands-Only CPR training kiosk, according to a press release. The initiative, sponsored by Providence Saint John's Health Center, aims to provide residents with rapid training in the lifesaving technique. The unveiling coincided with National CPR and AED Awareness Week.
The mobile kiosk will initially be stationed at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, offering patients and their families the opportunity to learn Hands-Only CPR. This unit will then travel to various locations throughout Los Angeles. This effort complements an existing stationary kiosk at LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal, which annually trains approximately 14,000 people.
"A few minutes of instruction can save a life. We see it over and over again in our emergency departments – patients who suffered cardiac arrest and were saved by loved ones or bystanders who stepped up to apply CPR or to use an AED," Michael Ricks, chief executive of Providence Saint John's Health Center, said in the release.
The American Heart Association highlights that over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually, with a 90% mortality rate, partly due to a lack of immediate CPR. The new mobile kiosk features a touch screen with a video tutorial, a practice session on a manikin and a 30-second test, providing feedback on compression depth, rate and hand placement.
The training is available in English and Spanish and takes about five minutes.
