Amazon plugging Amazon One into all Whole Foods stores

July 20, 2023

Every Whole Foods grocery store will offer Amazon's palm payment option, Amazon One, by the time 2024 arrives.

The biometric technology lets shoppers pay with just a hand swipe at a kiosk after they've registered their palm print with a credit card. The mega omnichannel brand is also increasing its sales of the technology to other companies and brands, according to a CNBC report.

The news comes just about three years since Amazon debuted the payment technology, launching it initially in its Amazon Go stores.

The option is available in just under half, about 200, of Whole Foods stores. It's also been steadily popping up in non-Amazon locations including concert arena, stadiums and airport retail locations. In March Panera Bread, a self-serve kiosk pioneer, announced it is rolling out Amazon One at select bakery-cafes in the brand's hometown of St. Louis.

To learn more about how and why Amazon One is taking root, RetailCustomerExperience reached out to Peter Galvin, chief growth officer at NMI, a full commerce enablement technology company. NMI surveyed 1,000 U.S. consumers in October 2022. The data revealed the majority of consumers are willing and eager to try emerging payments technologies, such as contactless payments and biometric payments, and that speed and convenience are the driving forces behind these purchasing preferences.
