Alaska State Sen. Cathy Tilton has introduced Senate Bill 249, a measure aimed at curbing cryptocurrency kiosk scams that disproportionately target older residents, according to an Anchorage Today report.

Similar to efforts in other states, the proposal would require operators to post clear warnings about common fraud schemes, verify user identities using government-issued identification and block transactions linked to known illicit or overseas wallets. It would also cap transaction fees and impose daily and monthly limits, steps Tilton described as necessary safeguards to protect residents who have spent decades building their savings.

The legislation comes as Alaska reports a sharp rise in online fraud, with more than $26 million in losses recorded in 2024. Seniors accounted for roughly one-third of that total. Tilton said the bill is intended not to restrict technology but to bring greater transparency and accountability to the sector.
