Alabama family court offers book vending machine

Book vending machines have been installed in schools for years to promote reading, but the Jefferson County Family Court in Birmingham, Alabama may be the first court house to offer such a machine.

The glassfront book vending machine provided by bookvending.com was sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education and the Children's Policy Cooperative of Jefferson County, according to the university website.

The machine is located in the second-floor family waiting area and provides books at no cost. UAB professors and teacher candidates offer guidance on the selection of book titles.
