LAS VEGAS - McCarran International Airport is set to become the first to deploy self-service kiosks that aren't tied to a particular airline. Passengers on America West, Continental and Delta Air Lines flights will be able to use the same SpeedCheck kiosks to obtain boarding passes, according to USA Today.
While the airline industry has been a boon to the kiosk industry as more than a dozen individual airlines brought kiosks to market, the SpeedCheck kiosks are the first that can accommodate passengers from different airlines.
The International Airline Transport Association (IATA) has helped to develop a standard operating platform for the kiosks, said Colin Temple, manager of airport services for the global airline trade group. He told USA Today that other airports would roll out similar kiosks.
Las Vegas airport officials expect all 28 airlines operating there to eventually be accessible by the kiosks, with a dozen accessible by the end of summer. McCarran International plans to install 42 kiosks.
The SpeedCheck kiosks won't be limited to airport concourse installations, USA Today reported. Plans call for a kiosk in the parking garage and even in the city's convention center, which would allow passengers to claim boarding passes before arriving at the airport.
