Air New Zealand in line for check-in kiosks

September 19, 2002

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Air New Zealand passengers in at least two domestic airports will be able to use self-service, check-in kiosks starting in November, according to the New Zealand Herald.

The airline plans to deploy 10 check-in kiosks apiece at Auckland and Christchurch airports. Air New Zealand is also contemplating placing the kiosks at Wellington's airport, according to the report.

The kiosk deployment coincides with the launch of the airline's budget Express Class passenger service. Express Class plans also include a text alert service, which will inform passengers through their cell phones if flights are delayed 30 minutes or more.

The kiosk service will be available to domestic flyers with carry-on luggage. Flyers can obtain boarding passes and change seats using the kiosks. Air New Zealand officials said the check-in process could last as little as 30 seconds with the kiosks.

According to the Herald, the airline has not decided whether to make the service available for international customers.
