25 seconds: Australia airport testing self-service solution for bags

July 31, 2012

Brisbane Airport in Australia is testing a new self-service system that allows passengers to drop off their bags in less than 25 seconds.

Baggage handling specialists BCS Group and SITA developed the system, and Jetstar passengers are the first to use it. If successful, it may later include other airlines, according to airport-world.com.

Passengers check-in at the kiosk, attach the bag tag and then drop their bag at the self-bag drop station, where bags are weighed, scanned, measured and dispatched.

"The results to date at Brisbane are very encouraging, with bag drop taking just 25 seconds," Ilya Gutlin, SITA president for Asia Pacific, said in the story. "This compares very favorably to installations at other airports which have been reported as taking considerably longer."
