Study of human brain could improve self-checkout

A recent study of how the human brain recognizes and processes visual information, by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, could lead to improvements of electronic brain-machine interfaces, according to an article on gizmag.com.

Facial- and other image-recognition systems, such as those increasingly used in border control set-ups, could benefit from the findings, as well as self-checkout systems, which could be made more efficient at recognizing goods, the article reported.

"Our methods open a door that will quickly lead to a more complete and detailed understanding of how the brain is organized," said Alexander Huth, a doctoral student in neuroscience at UC Berkeley and lead author of the study.
