Tennessee moves toward self-service driver's license renewal

Bedford County, Tennessee, has installed a self-service kiosk for renewing driver's licenses as part of a statewide effort that Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security officials hope will reduce wait times at driver's license testing centers.

The user pays at the kiosk by credit or debit card and poses for a photo, which is then compared with the person in the previous license photo to avoid fraud, reported t-g.com. The kiosks are networked with state driver's license records and have facial-recognition software. A receipt is printed out which serves as a temporary driver's license until the real license arrives in the mail a few days later.

Only license renewal and replacement will be allowed at the kiosks, with first-time license recipients still required to go to the testing station.

Self Service driver's license renewal makes sense if it includes a vision test! only if the states are enabling their devices with the ability to test distance vision. I’d hate to be driving in any state that no longer tests vision during the renewal process!
