The Grand Strand Regional and South Strand Medical Center emergency departments in Myrtle Beach, S.C., now have check-in kiosks available for incoming patients, according to an article on wmbfnews.com.
Patients can check in at the kiosks with their driver's license or credit card for expedited information input, but patients can also manually enter their personal data on the kiosk touchscreen. Severe emergencies are taken into account, and the kiosk flags patients five and under or over 65 as priorities. An electronic log keeps the patients in sequential order until they can be triaged based on established clinical processes, the article said.
"The folks that have been coming in to the emergency department are surprised by the technology. After they are walked through the process they realize how simple it is. So they know on their next visit they will be able to do it independently," said Michelle Davies, GSRMC nursing director. "It lets the nurses identify the previous record more quickly. We can pull information from a previous visit such as allergies, and past medical history, that sort of thing."
