Korean discount retailer Emart recently placed 3D QR code sculptures throughout Seoul that could only be scanned between noon and 1 p.m., which are slow periods for the chain. Consumers who scanned and shopped during that hour received discounts, according to a story on springwise.com.

The marketing ploy, called Sunny Sales, led to Emart deploying special QR codes that depended on peak sunlight for proper viewing. Each successful scan took shoppers to a specific website with special offers, where they could purchase items via smartphone and have them delivered to their homes.

The campaign helped the retailer to increase membership by 58 percent in one month, and it also saw a 25-percent increase in sales between noon and 1 p.m.
